Beverly Farms aka “Animal Farm” Parade
A storm cloud remains over the Beverly, MA neighborhood, Beverly Farms. The parade of the horribles, an annual event which reportedly goes back some 150 years, is billed as a “family event”. This year it was anything but, organizers and marchers went too far.
A number of floats poked fun of neighboring Gloucester. Gloucester recently made national headlines when 17 of their teenage girls got pregnant in an apparent pact. Now the spotlight is on Beverly. Floats were throwing candy and condoms to kids. Imagine your child coming to you after picking up a condom asking “what kind of candy is this”. Another float had men in diapers crawling from a prop (a woman’s legs in birthing stirrups) and a giant phallus sprayed the crowd. Is this the “Farms” version of sex education, in the streets and in your face? Some signs were so offensive they couldn’t be shown on television or printed in the newspaper.
“knock ‘em up high when expectations are low, Gloucester, MA,”
“GHS GIRLS WENT TO BAND CAMPS CAME BACK PREGNANT TRAMPS
“GET YOUR GREASY POLE OUT OF THAT HOLE”
“SHE SMELLED LIKE TUNA I SHOULD HAVE PULLED OUT SOONA”
Three judges walked off in protest, later they would tell reporters they were through with the event vowing never to return again.
Beverly Farms is an interesting neighborhood. Part of the city of Beverly, locals drop “Beverly” from the name and call their neighborhood “The Farms” not wanting to associate themselves with the city or working class. Perhaps the “Farms” could learn some “class” from their neighbors.
Organizers of the parade are now attempting to deflect attention from the story by stating other towns had similar parades making fun of Gloucester. This might be true, but as we all know two wrongs don’t make a right.
Beverly Farms may claim to be an affluent neighborhood but I fail to see class here. Class isn’t something you buy. The “Farms” are getting their 15 minutes of fame shame.
